Soi Rommanee is located in Phuket old town area among other well-known streets. It is a connection between Talang Road and Debuk Road. Unlike in most places in Thailand, there are no electrical wires or telephone cables to be seen along the street. Everything has been nicely put away underground.
Around the period of 1902, there were high numbers of men workers due to the popularity of doing mining. Thus, women from Macau, Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia came here to make a living by entertaining the men workers. The area became the venue of entertainment, and this is the story of how the name “Rommanee” was given. In Thai, the word “Rommanee” refers to pleasure, entertainment, enjoyment, beauty, or adore. However, it was roughly translated to “naughty with the ladies” because of its famous history.
In the present time that mining is no longer exist in this area, and Soi Rommanee appears no such thing that is close to “The Venue of Entertainment”, it has left the unique Chino-Portuguese-style architecture along with the colorful buildings that is the combination of the old and the new to be adored.
Local families, mostly, come from Chinese background and have lived here for generations. Also, most building has been renovated to be more modern to suit the lifestyle. Some buildings were turned into guesthouse or café to welcome tourists and visitors, however, the sense of its classic characteristics remains still.
